What Is Acupuncture And How It Can Help You Heal

Acupuncture is one of the oldest self-healing meditation techniques. It combines a bit of science and spiritualism to fight off diseases.

Let’s start with the basics!

The Method of Acupuncture

According to Plinio Prioreschi, the earliest records of acupuncture are found in ‘Shih Chi’ (Record of history)

Although acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine, the mummified body of ‘Otzi the Iceman’ suggests it was practiced in Europe.

Procedure of Acupuncture

Traditional medical Chinese theory believes in the concept of vital energy. According to the theory, acupuncture points run across meridians – specific points which run across the whole body. These points are responsible for energy known as ‘qi’ or chi’. (Qi translates to air and living force which embodiments a human body)

When you visit an acupuncturist, he will notice your condition and observe your body. He will then insert multiple sterile, thin needles and advise you to use Chinese herbs for additional therapy.

Depending on where the needles are to be inserted, a patient will be asked to sit, stand, lie on a specific side or angle. When needles are inserted, a patient may feel a temporary stinginess.

There are also cases in which the inserted sterile needles need to be heated or stimulated with electricity to give the desired effect.

On average, needles will be placed for 5 – 30 minutes and a person may need multiple sessions with an acupuncturist. Typically, to treat a mild problem, you will need to take around 10 sessions to show improvement.

Science and Acupuncture

The US department of health and human services believes in the potential of acupuncture. The department has acknowledged the promising results in the treatment of nausea, chemotherapy, vomiting, headache and dental and back pain.

How It Helps You Heal?

Talking from a scientific perspective, human blood is responsible for the exchange of materials. On a microscopic level, capillaries are responsible for the exchange of materials (oxygen, CO2). One possible theory is that you are increasing pressure in an area (the meridian points). Due to an increase of oxygen at a place, the part connected with a specific energy point gets better.

The focus of the argument is, even if no-one understands the 100% working of acupuncture, it shows results.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

If you take care of sterile needles and correctly place and remove the needles inside your body, it is one of the best self healing meditation techniques but if you are careless, you can suffer from bruises, needle infection and organ damage.

Since normal acupuncture procedures cost around $50 - $70 per session, it is wise to visit an experienced acupuncturist. Notice how he/she performs the procedure and how you are recovered. Most states of the US require licensing of NCCAOM (National Certification Commission in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). Therefore, it is recommended to ask the certifications and experience of an acupuncturist you are going to seek for your health.
